Charles James Leonard was born in 1887 (Mildenhall Q1-1887 4A:710), son of Isaac and Sarah LEONARD (née BONNETT).
1891 census...Aged 4, he was at Cottages, Pot Hall Road, Mildenhall with his father Isaac LEONARD [37] farm labourer; his mother Sarah [30]; brother John [8]; sisters Mary Jane [10], Ellen [6] and Sarah [16 months]. All were born in Mildenhall. 1901 census...Aged 14, farm labourer, he was at Hurdle Drove, West Row with his parents (mother now recorded as born in Isleham); brothers John (farm labourer) and George [9] born Mildenhall; sister Sarah. 1911 census...Aged 24 a farm labourer, he was at Mr T Jaggard's farm at Hurdle Drove, West Row, with his widower father (now foreman); brothers John and George (farm labourers) and sister Sarah. In Q3-1916, in Bury St Edmunds, he married Selina BARTON [22-3-1884],later of GER Refreshment Rooms, Chingford. His brother George was killed serving in France in the Suffolk Regiment in 1918. see here |

1743 K.R.1912 on his medal index card indicates it was not possible to deliver (next of kin had a habit of moving without telling the Army) The 9th Essex were involved in the fighting to the west of Arras. A line drawn from Fampoux to Monchy , where it crosses the A1 is about the area of Lancer Lane and Rifle Trench. According to the war diary, at 3 am on the 30th, the battalion made a frontal attack on RIFLE TRENCH. They were relieved after dark and marched back to RAILWAY TRIANGLE. O.R. casualties recorded were 15 killed, 3 died of wounds, 91 wounded and 22 missing. CWC records 28 killed including 3 officers. Only one man has an identified grave, the rest are named on the Arras Memorial.
